“My campaign for Mayor will not focus on mistakes made by past administration, but focus on issues that are important to Stamford residence, business owners and taxpayers,” Zito said in his campaign kick-off speech held May 18 at the Ponus Yacht Club.

“My campaign will focus on improving the City and making Stamford a better place to live, work and raise a family.”

If elected, Zito plans on forming an advisory team to help him meet each city department’s needs while also working to cut spending to make Stamford more affordable. He added that there will be tough decisions to make, but as a businessman has experience making those types of decisions.

“We need to reduce expenses – and do more for less. We need to cut spending because local taxpayers can no longer afford current spending,” he said.

Born and raised in Stamford the candidate graduated from Westhill High School in 1983. He started his own business J. Zito Services LLC and is an active member of Backyard Humanitarians, among other local charities and organizations.

The mayor’s race became open after Michael Pavia decided not to run for re-election earlier this year. He was elected in 2009 after Dannel Malloy stepped down to pursue and ultimately become governor.

Other candidates running for mayor include Board of Education member Jerry Pia and former Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele for the Republican nomination and State Rep. William Tong, Board of Finance member David Martin, City Rep. Eileen Heaphy, and former city official William Callion for the Democrat nomination.

Party endorsements will be made the week of July 16, with primaries taking place Sept. 10, if necessary. Election Day is on Nov. 5.
