STAMFORD, Conn. -- State Sen. Carlo Leone (D-Stamford) recently visited the Stamford headquarters for Eastern Land Management looking to help the family-owned snow removal business add jobs.
Leone introduced the small business to the state’s Small Business Express Program, an initiative aimed at helping Connecticut’s small businesses to grow and hire new employees. With the program’s assistance, Eastern Land Management has been able to create or retain at least 18 full-time jobs, and hopes to add more in the near future, representatives said. These positions include new account managers and salespersons, as well as landscape and construction workers.
“Small businesses are the cornerstone of our economy, employing over 60 percent of Connecticut’s workforce. Helping these companies to grow is essential for getting our economy on the right track again, and that’s what the Small Business Express Program is all about,” said Senator Leone. “I am proud to be here at Eastern Land Management today. They have been able to take advantage of this program to put more people to work, improve their facility and buy some much needed equipment. I would encourage other small businesses looking to grow in Stamford and Darien to apply as well.”
The company received a $194,000 job creation loan, as well as a $50,000 matching grant after applying for the state’s Small Business Express Program through the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development. To date, at least 847 companies have participated in the program, creating or retaining over 11,000 jobs statewide with the assistance of similar low-interest loans and grants, representatives said.
“Participating in the Small Business Express Program has allowed our company to do number of things we might not otherwise have been able to, certainly in such a short period of time," said Bruce More Sr., President and Founder of Eastern Land Management. "We have made improvements to our building and addressed drainage issues on our property that we otherwise would have put off much longer. We have hired a number of new people and kept others on the payroll."
Connecticut businesses with fewer than 100 employees are eligible for the Small Business Program by calling 860-270-8052.
