NORWALK, Conn. -- U.S. Rep. Jim Himes (D-4th District) has been named one of the most pro-environmental legislators, according to the League of Conservation Voters.

The LCV's 2013 National Environmental Scorecard gives Himes a grade of 96 percent for work prior to taking office in Congress and a 95 percent for his work since taking office.

“We have a moral obligation to preserve our planet for future generations, handing it over to our children in as good or better condition than we received it from our parents,” Himes said in a release.

“Unfortunately, the House Majority in this Congress has taken it upon themselves to try to roll back important environmental protections and increase our reliance on dirty fossil fuels, and I was proud to stand on the side of keeping our air safe to breathe and our water clean to drink.”

Members of Congress were graded based on 28 votes on issues ranging from renewable energy investments to clean drinking water protection.

The 2013 House session was characterized by the Republican leadership “[continuing] its unprecedented assault on the environment and public health that began during the 112th Congress” and in which “climate change deniers ramped up their rhetoric, pushed harmful legislation that would exacerbate the climate crisis, and blocked all efforts to address it,” according to the LCV.

Himes cast votes to uphold the Clean Air Act, protect national forests and public lands and maintain funding for renewable energy and energy efficiency, according to the release.
