The ordinance is scheduled to end on Dec. 31 and the Special Water Committee of the Board of Representatives has proposed to continue the testing until the end of 2015.

The committee members said the testing is important to give the city an idea of the contamination problem, but didn’t feel it was enough at its January meeting. They did suggest looking into extending the city’s water mains and letting homeowners know of filtration systems they can have installed.

Under the current ordinance, the city’s health department can do 750 tests per year, and residents can request a test be done every two years. Priority will be given to first time requesters, and tests cost $100 each for residents. Test results are made available on the city’s website and some 1,800 tests have been requested since the ordinance began in 2011. The city did start an alternative testing program to help more people get tested.

The ordinance was passed with a “sunset clause” so the Board of Representatives can change, continue or end the testing as it saw fit. The committee and board will still have to decide on continuing the testing before it can be officially extended.

The public hearing will begin at 7 p.m. in the Republican Caucus Room on the fourth floor of the Stamford Government Center, 888 Washington Blvd.
