The Democrats made their choices at a caucus in Hartford. They also selected New Haven's Sen. Martin M. Looney as the next Senate president.

“I am deeply honored and humbled by the support of my peers in the State Senate,” Duff, a longtime state senator, said in a statement. “I am looking forward to working with Senate President Looney and my Democratic colleagues to make Connecticut an even better place to live, work and raise a family.

"The opportunity to lead the caucus would not have been possible without the support and faith of my constituents in Norwalk and Darien, so I thank them as well.”

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy congratulated each of the four legislative caucuses for selecting leaders for the upcoming term in office.

“I want to congratulate the leadership of all four caucuses on their selections, and in particular those who are being designated to serve for their first time in these principal roles, including Senate President-Elect Martin Looney, Senate Majority Leader-Elect Bob Duff, Senate Minority Leader-Elect Len Fasano, and House Minority Leader-Elect Themis Klarides," Malloy said. "I also look forward to working closely again with Speaker Brendan Sharkey and House Majority Leader Joe Aresimowicz.

“As each of us prepare to begin new respective terms in office at the start of the upcoming year, I’m feeling very optimistic about what we can accomplish for the people who’ve elected us. Working as partners, we can continue strengthening our state, fostering growth and generating a prosperous Connecticut.”
