New Canaan Democrats Named To Posts On Town Boards

NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- New Democratic members were recently appointed to the Planning & Zoning Commission, the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Parks and Recreation Committee.

The appointments were made by the Board of Selectmen and announced by the New Canaan Democratic Town Committee.

The appointments are:

  • Transportation and land use planner Claire Tiscornia will serve on the P&Z;
  • Katie Owsley, a board member of the New Canaan Lacrosse Association and co-president of the Saxe PTC, will serve on Parks and Recreation Commission; and
  • Ben Bilus, a retired attorney with extensive expertise in environmental, energy and real estate law, has been named to the ZBA.

“We’re pleased that the town Democrats will be represented on these three important town boards by individuals who have this depth of knowledge and expertise,” said Jane Himmel, chair of the New Canaan Democratic Town Committee.

Tiscornia has been a transportation and land use planner for STV Inc., a New York firm that has conducted land use feasibility studies for numerous federal, state and local transportation projects. She holds a masters from San Jose State University. In New Canaan, she co-chaired PTC events at Saxe Middle School and the West School, was co-chair of Moms for Mikey Silent Auction and co-chair of Fundraising for New Canaan Cares.

Owsley, a Williams College graduate, is a finance associate at Han Feng Inc., a high fashion designer based in New York. Since moving to New Canaan 11 years ago, she has volunteered as an adult literacy coach, served as a member of the 2012 Enrollment and Capacity Study Group for the New Canaan Public Schools, a volunteer at South and East schools, and delivers food to area shelters.

Bilus comes to the ZBA with a background in law, most recently as general counsel to Azzarito Management, a private equity firm. Before that, he was of counsel to Preti, Flaherty Beliveau, Pachios & Haley, a Portland, Maine, firm on industrial energy matters, and senior environmental counsel to Champion International in Stamford. He is former president of the New Canaan Rotary Club and former assistant governor of District 7980 of Rotary International.
