STAMFORD, Conn. -- Former U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman has withdrawn his name from consideration for the position of head of the FBI, according to NBC News.

Lieberman, a three-term Democratic senator from Connecticut, sent a letter to President Donald Trump on Thursday, citing a potential conflict on interest, NBC News reported. Lieberman is a senior counsel at the law firm of Marc Kasowitz, who Trump is expected to hire to represent him in matters related to the Russia investigation, according to NBC News.

Stamford native Lieberman had last week been considered a front runner to replace James Comey as director of the FBI, according to multiple media reports. It was reported on Wednesday that his name was out of consideration for the position.

Lieberman's consideration had drawn criticism from Democrats, who cited his lack of law enforcement experience.
