Lieberman Honors Stamford-Based AmeriCares

STAMFORD, Conn. — U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman returned to his old stomping grounds in the Glenbrook section of Stamford to name Curt Welling, CEO and president of AmeriCares, one of “Joe’s Heroes.”

“It really does express the best in American values,” Lieberman said of the global disaster relief organization. The senator said his father owned a liquor store down the street from the AmeriCares headquarters on Hamilton Avenue.

The organization allows people to have “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” in countries that may not have that set of values. Welling received the award on behalf of the organization, and Lieberman credited him with expanding its work over the past 10 years.

Lieberman, an Independent Democrat, bestows his award, which he says should be known as “Connecticut’s Heroes,” to organizations and people who are helping others and do not receive the recognition they deserve. “I want people to know, and them to know, how thankful we are,” he said, adding that he has given out more awards as his final Senate term is coming to an end.

In addition to honoring Welling, a Wilton resident, and the organization, Lieberman also took a tour of the warehouse and was updated on the organization’s disaster relief missions, its post-emergency projects and its free clinic program.

“It has to make you feel good,” Lieberman said of the work AmeriCares employees are doing everyday, joking that he can’t say the same about the U.S. Senate.

He is retiring from in January when his term ends. His seat will be filled by the winner on the November ballot — either Republican Linda McMahon or U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy, a Democrat.
