Himes is a Democrat running for re-election against Republican challenger Dan Debicella for the Fourth District’s seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. He recently sat down with the Daily Voice at his campaign offices in Norwalk to discuss important issues in this year’s election, such as partisan bickering in government.

“Well it’s been appalling,” he said of the bickering and gridlock in the most recent Congress. “This is a Congress that, despite the fact that 90 percent of Americans support background checks for guns, including this American, it got stopped in the Senate. This is a Congress that shut down the federal government, causing incalculable damage to the economy.”

The government needs to get back to governing, and work on important issues such as immigration reform and tax reform, he said. Himes said that he has tried not to contribute to the partisanship.

“I believe I can say that I have not been a participant in the partisan mud-throwing. My district doesn’t stand for that, and it’s not my nature,” he said.

Himes pointed to his vote for the Simpson-Bowles budget, a bipartisan budget was supported by only 38 members of Congress, which he said was a “realistic way of dealing with our economy and with the debt.”

“I kind of made my marker there. I said, I will not vote with the Democrats or the Republicans, I’ll vote for the Simpson-Bowles budget,” Himes said. “I try to model the kind of pragmatic bipartisanship that is some day going to get us back to governing the country.”
