STAMFORD, Conn. — Former Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele announced Monday that he will seek the Republican nomination for mayor of Stamford.

“Stamford has been my home since I immigrated to America with my parents when I was three years old, 55 years ago,” Fedele said in a release. “It was a place of unlimited opportunity then, and it remains one of the Northeast’s most vibrant and successful cities.”

Fedele said the city has been successful by having strong public schools, neighborhoods, a healthy business climate and smart developing. He added that the city’s economic future is at stake.

“Stamford is an economic engine, both locally and regionally,” he said in the release. “If Stamford succeeds, the region succeeds.  If our engine is sputtering, the region will feel those effects as well.”

Current Mayor Michael Pavia (R) decided in January not to run for a second term. He has served since 2009 after Dannel Malloy, a democrat,  stepped down to run for governor.

Fedele joins what is becoming a crowded mayor’s race field with Board of Education member Jerry Pia also going for the Republican nomination, and Democrat State Rep. William Tong also running. There are more candidates still expected to announce runs as well.

In addition to serving the state as Lt. Governor from 2007 to 2011, Fedele's previous political experience includes serving on the city’s Board of Representatives from 1987 to 1991 and as State Representative for the 147th district from 1992 to 2002. He works as the founder and chief executive officer of Pinnacle Group, a nationwide IT company based in Stamford.
