"I am David Martin, and I am the next mayor of Stamford," Martin said in opening his victory speech at 9:50 p.m. He joked that he would use his acceptance speech this year, after conceding two years ago to Michael Pavia.

He first ran for office 30 years ago to join the city's Board of Representatives.

"Little did I realize that I would spend 30 years doing that," Martin said of his years in public service. "This has been a labor of love, it has become my passion for the city I love so much."

The mayoral seat was open after Pavia decided not to seek re-election after just one term in office.

"Elected office has never been about power or prestige, it has been about helping people," Martin said in thanking his supporters. "Now I can take that next step."

Martin said the race had been close from the beginning. He beat William Tong in a Democratic primary in September to run as the Democrat in the fall election.

Republican candidate Michael Fedele conceded at 8:55 p.m., congratulating his opponent on a well-run contest.

"This is a city that I love, that has given much to me and my family," Fedele said in a concession speech at about 8:50 p.m. He offered his assistance to Martin in his vision for Stamford over the next four years.

Martin, who lost four years ago, had received the endorsement of Gov. Dannel Malloy, a former mayor of Stamford. Martin had not yet spoken publicly or declared victory as of 9 p.m.

Fedele was a former lieutenant governor for the state of Connecticut. Martin is a former longtime member of the Stamford's Board of Representatives and onetime president of the board.
