David Martin Opposes New Stamford Boatyard Plan

STAMFORD, Conn. —Mayoral candidate and Board of Finance member David Martin expressed his disapproval with the Mayor’s revamped boatyard plan Saturday holding an event at the proposed location.

“In 1999, I voted in favor of making this property a park when I was on the Board of Representatives, and I am not going to break my commitment and vote now to turn the park into an industrial boatyard,” Martin, (D), said.

He added that the plan goes against the zoning approval in 2007 requiring a boatyard on the 14-acre property where Brewer’s Yacht Haven was, and where Bridgewater Associates plans to move, a news release said. He also believes the channel is too narrow and too heavily trafficked for a boatyard at the proposed 205 Magee Avenue location.

Martin also plans on urging the rest of the Board of Finance to vote against the new proposal, and wants Mayor Michael Pavia and Building and Land Technology to create a new plan.

“I want the transformation in the South End that BLT is orchestrating to succeed, and I want Bridgewater to come to Stamford,” he said in the release, “But we need to get to work to find a better site.”

The mayor's race is open after Pavia decided not to run for a second term. He was first elected in 2009 defeating Martin, and taking the seat left vacant after Dannel Malloy stepped down to pursue and eventually become Governor.

Martin is vying for the Democratic nomination against State Rep. William Tong, City Rep. Eileen Heaphy, and ex. Director of Public Safety, Health, and Wellness William Callion. Republicans going for the nomination are Board of Education member Jerry Pia and former Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele.

Party endorsements will be made during the week of July 16 through 23, and if necessary a primary election will be held on Sept. 10, according to the Secretary of the State’s office. Election Day is Nov. 5.
