Sterling Jean, 19, was charged with second-degree assault and second-degree breach of peace. She was held on $2,500 bond and will appear in court Dec. 17.

The arrest stems from a complaint on Oct. 13, when a 21-year-old Stamford woman told police that she was assaulted with a hammer outside La Torche Nightclub on Washington Street in Norwalk.

The woman said that she was leaving a memorial at the bar when Jean, whom she knows, hit her in the face with a claw-type hammer in the nearby Webster parking lot, police said. The woman told police that she and Jean have had encounters in the past, one of which ended in a fight.

After getting hit, the woman grabbed Jean's shirt, and several people came and broke up the fight, police said. The complainant told police that Jean broke free and punched her in the head. After the fight, the victim and a friend were looking for her purse, which she told police contained $2,500 in cash. She told police that she was preparing to move, and the money was for a security deposit and first month's rent. She said that she believed Jean had taken the money, police said.

The woman went to police headquarters and reported the assault. Police said she had a cut on her face and swelling on her forehead, but refused to be transported to the hospital.

After an investigation, a warrant was issued for Jean's arrest, and she turned herself in Sunday night.
