Stamford police Officer Troy Strauser was badly injured when he fell about 20 feet during a foot chase of a suspect in Norwalk near the Exit 14 ramp on Interstate 95 just after 1 a.m. May 17.
The chase started in Stamford’s West Side, when police were trying to stop suspects in a robbery. The suspects drove north on I-95, getting off at Exit 9 and driving into Darien on the Post Road before getting back on the highway. The foot pursuit began after the suspects' vehicle crashed while they attempted to get off the I-95 at Exit 14.
Strauser chased a suspect who made his way into a wooded area and back down to the highway. Unable to see the edge of the bridge abutment, Strauser fell, landing face down, bleeding heavily and severely injuring his arm.
Norwalk and Stamford police confronted the suspect on the highway and arrested him.
Frank Douglas, 30, of 43 Lincoln Ave., Norwalk, was charged with second-degree robbery, assault on a police officer, cruelty to animals, interfering with a police officer, engaging in a pursuit and multiple motor vehicle charges.
Strauser remained in intensive care at Norwalk Hospital until May 22 and was released May 25 to rehabilitate from home. He was treated for injuries to his face, arms and internal organs.
