Taxi Hits 72-Year-Old Woman In Motorized Wheelchair In Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. -- A 72-year-old woman in a motorized wheelchair suffered severe injuries after she was struck by a taxi Thursday evening in downtown Stamford, police said.

Stamford Police are seeking witnesses to an accident Thursday evening in which a 72 year-old woman in a motorized wheelchair was struck by a taxi in the area of Washington Boulevard and Main Street. The woman suffered severe injuries, police said.

The accident occurred in a crosswalk on Washington Boulevard near the intersection at Main Street at 6:17 p.m. Thursday, police said. 

The unnamed woman was taken to Stamford Hospital. She was struck by a 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis Independent Taxi driven by Joseph Jen, 67, of Cove Avenue, Norwalk, police said. He wasn't injured in the accident.

The woman was in the south crosswalk on Washington Boulevard and was traveling from the east side of the street to the west side of the street when she was struck by the southbound taxi, police said.

Stamford police are asking for any witnesses to the accident to contact officers Richard Dabrowski or Hugh Mullin at 203-977-4712.
