Jessica Carrafiello was traveling north on the southbound side of Route 8 near Exit 15 at about 10 p.m. in a Ford Edge SUV, state police said. The driver of a Subaru Crosstrek SUV heading south in the same lane attempted to swerve but was hit head-on by the Edge, state police said.

The injured driver, a 52-year-old Seymour man, was transported to St. Vincent's Medical Center by Derby EMS with unknown injuries, state police said.

Carrafiello was charged with operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol, failure to drive in proper lane down a multiple-lane highway and driving the wrong way down a divided highway. She was released for an appearance in Derby Superior Court on Nov. 27.

Route 8 was closed for a while after the accident, with traffic detoured off at Exit 15, state police said.
