Clifford Voight of James Farm Road, who was in the third car in the crash, was not wearing a seat belt when he slammed into the back of another car at about 9:30 a.m. and was killed, state police said.

According to a state police accident report, all three of the cars were traveling south in the left lane when the crash occurred between Exits 8 and 7.

The first vehicle, a Suzuki SUV driven by Jonathan Hernandez, 29, of Wallingford, “dramatically reduced its speed within the left lane,” state police said.

A Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Derek Michaels, 32, of Vernon "suddenly slowed as well," state police said.

“As both vehicles slowed and/or stopped in the left lane,” Voight‘s Maxima “forcibly struck” the Grand Cherokee, pushing it into the Suzuki SUV, state police said.

Voight, injured by the "severe impact," was transported to St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, where he was later pronounced dead, state police said.

Hernandez was also taken to St. Vincent’s where he was treated for minor injuries and released, state police said. Michaels reported no injuries.

State Police were continuing to investigate the fatal crash.

Traffic was tied up in the area for hours, with two lanes closed as the state police investigated.
