State Police said troopers attempted to stop a sliver Chevrolet Sonic on I-95 southbound near Exit 10, for following another vehicle too closely in an active construction zone. Instead of stopping, the driver took off at a high rate of speed, and following a brief chase, got off at Exit 2 in Greenwich and smashed into a van, state police said.
The Sonic burst into flames, according to the Stamford Advocate. Troopers arrested Michael Lundy, 41, of Raleigh, and Antonio Freeland, 26, of Burlington, as they crawled out a wind of the burning car, the Advocate said.
After the arrest, officers searched the 8-mile stretch of I-95 and found a bag containing 370 grams of cocaine that they had tossed out a window, state police and the Advocate said.
Lundy, who was held at the Bridgeport Correctional Center on $250,000 bond, was charged with possession of narcotics and possession of narcotics with intent to sell, police said.
Freeland, who was also held at the Bridgeport Correctional Center on $350,000 bond, was charged with possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics with intent to sell, reckless endangerment, interfering with an officer and reckless driving, police said.
According to the Stamford Advocate, Lundy is a convicted killer and Freeland is a felon with a long criminal record.
The Advocate also reported that the State Police had been tipped off that two black men in a small silver car with North Carolina plates would be moving narcotics through the area on I-95.
State troopers spotted the silver Sonic and as they activated their sirens to pull over the car, the two suspects took off at over 110 mph, the Advocate said.
