Stamford's Asst. Fire Chief Under Investigation, Resigns

STAMFORD, Conn. — Assistant Chief William Smith of the Stamford Fire Department has resigned, a news release from the Mayor’s Office said.

There is a criminal investigation being conducted into a motor vehicle accident Smith is suspected of being involved in, that took place about 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, the release said. As of Friday morning no arrest had been made. 

“This is a clear message to all employees of the City of Stamford, regardless of whether or not you are a 35 year veteran with an exemplary service record, as is the case with Assistant Chief Smith, the City will not tolerate this type of behavior,” the release said.

There will be no other comment from the city, the release said.
