Stamford Woman Charged In Check- Stealing Scheme

STAMFORD, Conn. — A Stamford woman was accused Tuesday of stealing and cashing checks from a neighbor.

An owner of a landscaping company reported to police that he never received checks from customers totaling more than $9,100 that were cashed in January , Sgt. Peter diSpagna said. Investigators were able to trace the checks back to an owner of a bodega in Stamford, who said he received them from Lisa Ragsdale, the sergeant said.

Ragsdale, 45, lives in the same complex as the landscaper and gained access to his mailbox and took the checks, diSpagna said. She then used the checks at the bodega to purchase items and receive cash, and the owner of the store cashed them at a check cashing location in Stamford, the sergeant said.

She was charged with two counts of third-degree larceny, and five counts of third-degree forgery, police said. Ragsdale will also have to repay each victim, the landscaper and bodega owner, the full $9,142.46 the checks were worth, diSpagna said.

She denied committing the crimes, he said.
