Sgt. Kelly Connelly said the complainant answered a Craigslist ad about a lease at a Washington Boulevard apartment building and was told to deposit $2,800 into the landlord's account at Wells Fargo by a woman. The money would be the first month's rent and a security deposit.
When she tried to deposit the money into the account, she was told by a bank representative the account was on hold and no money could be deposited.
The complainant called the woman she was dealing with, and the woman directed her to go to Chase Bank and deposit it in another account and for good measure, add another $2,500 on top of the original $2,800.
That sparked suspicions for 25-year-old, who then went to the building's leasing office only to be told they didn't have any apartments for rent under the name that the woman had given her, police said.
"They advised her that Craigslist's sometimes could be known to have these fraudulent rentals," Connelly said. "If that bank account wasn't on hold, she would have completely deposited all that money thinking she was going to get this place to live."
Connelly didn't have any information on why the account was on hold.
