The 16- and 15-year-old teens, who police didn't identify due to their ages, are each charged with one count of third-degree assault and third-degree conspiracy to commit assault.
A 31-year-old man was talking on a cellphone on Gregory Street at about 4 p.m. Monday when he was approached by the teens, who had masks on their faces and were riding bicycles, police said. The two began punching the man, and one picked up a bicycle and slammed it on the man, police said.
The attackers walked away without taking anything from the man and left their bicycles behind, police said. They calmly walked to Myrtle Avenue and then to Elm Street, police said.
The victim contacted police, and an off-duty police officer working at a construction site noticed the suspects and stopped them, police said. The complainant identified the duo as the ones who attack him and said he had no idea who they were or why they attacked him, police said. They also had ski masks in their possession, police said.
The victim didn't suffer any major injuries, police said.
On July 9, police said a similar attack occurred in which two males on bicycles attacked a man walking on Cherry Street. They pedaled away after attacking the man without trying to rob the victim, police said.
Sgt. Kelly Connelly said she had no information whether the two assaults were part of an initiation or a "knockout" type of game where innocent people are randomly attacked.
