The witness grabbed his crowbar to pry the driver out of his cab, which was struck by another car, police said. The force of the impact caused the taxi “to spin around numerous times before finally coming to rest after striking a jersey barrier,” Sgt. Robert Shawinsky said.

Both vehicles were totaled, Shawinsky said.

The witness wanted to remain anonymous after coming to the aid of Lesly Thiersaint, 60, of Stamford. When officers arrived, Thiersaint was lying on the pavement and complaining of chest pains, police said.

Thiersaint was taken to Stamford Hospital but no information was available on his injuries, Shawinsky said.

The other driver, Walter Hernandez, 24, of 24 Oak Hill St., blew through a red light and hit Thiersaint’s taxi in the intersection of Washington Boulevard and South State Street at 7:40 p.m., police said.

Hernandez was charged with reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle without a licence, failing to insure a motor vehicle and failure to obey a traffic control signal.

He was released on $500 bond and is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Stamford on June 18.
