STAMFORD, Conn. — All residences in Stamford must have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors after an ordinance went in effect on Sunday.

“Having properly installed and operating smoke and carbon monoxide detectors - in every residence - will alert individuals and families of smoke and carbon monoxide 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Mayor Michael Pavia said in a release.

Detectors should be located on the ceiling or wall outside of each individual sleeping area. There also must be a smoke detector in each room and in every story of the residence, the release said.

Residents can self-certify their homes by visiting the city’s website and clicking on “Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Detector Ordinance.”

For more information call the city’s fire marshal’s office, 203-977-4651.
