STAMFORD, Conn. -- The Stamford Police Department is warning residents about a utility company scam wherein homeowners are being told they will have their power shut off if they don't pay their bill using Green Dot cards or other nontraditional methods.

The department's Financial Crimes Unit warns residents that no utility company will ever call and ask you to pay a bill using Green Dot cards. If you are contacted by someone claiming to be from a utility company and you are skeptical of their credentials, find a copy of your bill and call the number listed there to ensure you are speaking to a true employee.

Unfortunately, some local residents and businesses have fallen victim to this scam. Eversource, the local power company supplier, is aware of the scam.

If you are a victim of any scam, you may report it to the Stamford Police Department at 203-977-4444.
