Stamford Police Nab Bridgeport Man With Loaded Handgun

STAMFORD, Conn. -- A man dumped a backpack - and the loaded handgun in it - and made a run for it when he saw officers closing in on him Tuesday night in Stamford, police said.

However, he didn't get far and was arrested by Stamford police and charged with a pair of weapons offenses.

Jonathan Jamar Bonaparte, 26, of 51 Center St., Bridgeport, was charged with criminal possession of a firearm and illegal alteration of a pistol after the gun's serial number was filed down. He is also charged with interfering with an officer.

Police received a tip at about 9:30 p.m. that a black male with a handgun was in the area of Ursula Place. When officers arrived, they saw the suspect, police said.

But he saw them, too, and dumped the backpack he was carrying and began to flee, police said. However, he didn't get far and was arrested, police said.

When officers examined the backpack, a loaded .357-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun was discovered inside, police.

He was held on $50,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
