STAMFORD, Conn. -- The reported stabbing of a Stamford man during a soccer game turned out to be a bad April Fool's Day joke on his London-based girlfriend, police said.

The worried woman in England contacted police at about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday after she had received a text from her boyfriend that he had been stabbed during a soccer game Tuesday evening, police said. She tried to contact him, but after a few hours of failing to reach him she called police.

Sgt. Kelly Connelly said officers began searching for the Pacific Street resident, including at his residence, and were even heading to track down soccer fields to see whether he was still there.

Officers went to another address given to them by the woman and found the man unharmed with the lame explanation that it was an April Fool's Day joke, police said.

The man, who had wasted police officers' time with the prank, was given a "stern" talking to by the officers about his "idiocy," Connelly said.

The sergeant in the report said, "When we cleared the call we came to the conclusion that it was an April Fool's Day joke by an April fool."
