The team has launched a GoFundMe drive to buy a Lenco BearCat, which is calls an essential tool for providing state-of-the-art protection. The goal is to raise $200,000.

The BearCat is widely used to protect law enforcement and rescue civilian populations in weather-related disasters, high-risk warrant service and active shooter scenarios.

The BearCat has sufficient ballistic protection to provide a safe working environment for SRT members. Not only does the BearCat protect the police inside the vehicle, but the vehicle has also been used to evacuate citizens near dangerous incidents.

It has also been used to rescue wounded personnel and to evacuate citizens from life-threatening situations, such as barricaded suspects and active shooter scenarios.

Stamford is the fourth largest city in Connecticut. Each of the three larger cities — Bridgeport, New Haven and Hartford — has a BearCat currently in service and Hartford and Bridgeport have two.

A BearCat in Stamford would also be available to neighboring towns during crisis situations.

The Stamford Police Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization, is working with Stamford Police Department and the SRT to help procure the funds necessary for the BearCat.
