Michael J. Catchings, 19, of 1584 North Ave., was charged with possession of narcotics, sale of illegal drugs and failure to wear a seat belt, police said.

At 2 a.m., officers at Baxter Avenue and West Avenue spotted an eastbound 2002 BMX X5 on Baxter Avenue with a front-seat passenger not waring a seat belt, Sgt. Kelly Connelly said.

When officers pulled over the X5 on northbound Interstate 95 at Exit 7, they noticed the front seat passenger -- identified as Catchings -- appeared to be nervous, Connelly said.

"They said that Catchings appeared to be very nervous and was breathing very heavily and was very evasive toward the officers," she said.

Catchings has had previous contact with police, including an arrest in connection with a Feb. 20 robbery. He was told to leave the car and had to be told twice to take his hands out of his pockets, Connelly said.

The arresting officer noticed something unusual while checking Catchings, she said.

"As I was patting him down, I felt a hard circular bump protruding from the buttocks area of his pants," the officer wrote in his report, according to Connelly.

When asked what it was, Catchings admitted it was crack cocaine, she said.

"He sighed and put his head down," and admitted that he had a bag of crack cocaine "in his butt area," Connelly said, referring to what the officer wrote.

The cocaine weighed a total of 3.5 grams, Connelly said.

He was released on a promise to appear in court on June 8. The driver was released with no charges, Connelly said.
