Stamford Police Charge 17 In Gambling Operations

STAMFORD, Conn. - Stamford police charged 17 people in two gambling operations on the east side of the city Monday night.

Police found that the operations had card games, in- and out-of-state lotto games, and possibly sports betting as well, said Capt. Brian McElligott, commander of District 4 North Stamford. The department became aware of the operations after receiving complaints from people, he said.

The Neighborhood Impact Unit applied for and executed search warrants Monday, which led to the arrests, McElligott said.

The operations were both held in private residences, one at 827 East Main St., the other at 31 Lafayette St., and police are not sure if they are related or separate, McElligott said.

The three people running the operations - Orlando DeLaRosa, Arleen Gonzalez-Orgando, and Belony Paul, were arrested and taken to police headquarters to be processed, McElligott said.

The other 14 people were charged with professional gambling and were allegedly participants of the operation. They were given misdemeanor summons on scene, McElligott said.

DeLaRosa, 28, of the Bronx, N.Y., was charged with transmission of gambling information, illegal transmission of gambling information, and illegal professional gambling, police said.

Gonzalez-Orgando, 24, address unknown, was charged with illegal possession of gambling devices, illegal gambling, and gambling record, police said.

Paul, 58, of Stamford, was charged with transmission of gambling information, maintaining gambling premises, and professional gambling, police said.

All three were held on $5,000 bonds and have a court date of Dec.3, McElligott said.
