STAMFORD, Conn. -- Officers were able to locate a woman suspected in a car theft by simply looking through her purse — which she had left in the middle of the street in her haste to leave the scene of the crime, Stamford police said.

Lauren Smith-Fields, 18, of 246 West Ave., Bridgeport, was charged with third-degree burglary and theft from a motor vehicle, police said.

Her bond was set at $1,000, and she is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 23.

A resident of a Hubbard Avenue residence noticed a woman rummaging through her mother's vehicle, police Sgt. Jennifer Lynch said.

She yelled at the suspect, who quickly ran south on Hubbard Avenue, Lynch said. The woman gave police a description of the suspect, and soon after police arrived, an officer discovered a purse in the middle of Hubbard Avenue.

They were able to call the woman, who was at a Myrtle Avenue address, police said.
