Police first arrested Victor Bester, 50, of 41 Stillwater Ave., after the standoff and charged him with second-degree breach of peace and interfering with officers/resisting, police said. Bester is suspected of  carrying a gun and ran from officers into his residence before surrendering peacefully after a half hour, Hohn said.

“We just can’t find the gun,” the lieutenant said, adding that he's confident that Bester was the suspect they were looking for because he climbed an 8-foot fence, ran from police, and did not come out right away.

After police ended their search, Michael Callahan, 49, of 55 Stillwater Ave., decided to “take it upon himself” to find the gun and began searching Bester’s building, Hohn said. While he was there he heard contractors, and grabbed a bat and began damaging the residence, smashing out seven windows, the lieutenant said.

When officers arrived Callahan began struggling with them and had to be taken down and handcuffed at gun point, Hohn said. During the struggle several officers fell on glass and were cut, they were treated and released from Stamford Hospital, the lieutenant said.

Callahan and Bester have had problems in the past and Callahan has been banned from entering 41 Stillwater Ave., Hohn said.

Callahan was charged with third-degree burglary, second-degree reckless endangerment, two counts of second-degree threatening, third-degree criminal mischief, carrying a dangerous weapon, and interfering/resisting, police said. He was held in lieu of a $50,000 bond, Hohn said.
