Angered that she wouldn't loan her car to him, Herbert Gonzalez-Silva, 31, attacked his girlfriend, causing bruises and scratches to her face, arms and chest area at about 1 p.m. during a dispute at the Elmcroft Road residence, police said.
The woman was able to lock the man out of their second floor apartment and call 911, but he grabbed a gas can, police said.
The victim told police that while he poured gasoline on the apartment door, he uttered chilling threats that: "Today, for sure, you're going to burn. Today for sure I'm going to burn. Today we're both going to burn," police said.
The man left the scene but was arrested later near Henry and Cedar streets, police said.
Gonzalez-Silva is charged with two counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, three counts of risk of injury to a child, and one count each of third-degree assault and disorderly conduct.
The three counts of risk of injury to a child are for the three children of another family who live in a first-floor apartment. Those children are a 12-year-old girl, a 10-year-old boy and a 10-month-old girl.
Bond was set at $100,000, and Gonzalez-Silva was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
