Officers responded to the area of Woodway Road at around 8:45 a.m. on Saturday on a report of an unresponsive driver in a vehicle. When they officers located the car, which was stopped at an angle near the side of the road, 38-year-old Randolfo Ruiz-Lopez of Stamford was standing near the car, police said.
A witness told police that she had seen the car stopped with the driver, Ruiz-Lopez, passed out at the wheel. A second witness was also on the scene and together they were able to rouse Ruiz-Lopez before officers arrived, police said. The witnesses said the car had been running and still in drive, but they were able to put it in park and turn it off before police arrived, according to police.
Ruiz-Lopez told officers that the car had "just stopped," and denied being asleep at the wheel, police said. Officers detected the strong odor of alcohol coming from Ruiz-Lopez, and he failed field sobriety tests, according to police.
Ruiz-Lopez was arrested and charged with driving under the influence. It was also discovered that he had a suspended license due to a previous DUI in 2010, police said. When he performed breath testing at police headquarters to determine his blood alcohol content, the results showed .2253 and .2198, more than two times the legal limit of .08, according to police. He was released on a $500 bond.
