Santos Gonzales, 25, of 42 Anderson St., was charged with criminal attempt at second-degree sexual assault, second-degree assault, first-degree kidnapping and resisting arrest.
He was held on $100,000 bond for an appearance Tuesday in state Superior Court in Stamford.
The incident began when Gonzales spoke with a woman he had once dated at her work place on the city's West Side early Monday morning, police said. The couple broke up a few weeks ago, said Sgt. Christian DiCarlo. During the conversation, he made a threat to kill her family back in Guatemala, DiCarlo said.
"At this point, she figured she could still kind of talk her way out of it," DiCarlo said, and she walked with him back to his residence.
At about 3 a.m. outside his residence, the discussion escalated violently after he punched her in the face several times and knocked her to the ground of the home's porch, police said.
"He tries to sexually assault her at that time," DiCarlo said.
Neighbors called police, and officers used flashlights to identify the address, police said. They shined their lights on the man and woman during the struggle, police said. Despite the police cruisers parked nearby and lights pointed at the man, he continued to assault the woman, DiCarlo said.
Officers rushed to grab him and pull him away from the woman, DiCarlo said.
The woman's clothes were torn, and the man's belt buckle was undone, DiCarlo said. The woman was treated and released from the hospital with minor injuries, police said.
The age of the woman was unknown.

- Raymond Bell, 63, of 597 Pacific St., was charged with second-degree fail to appear.
- Jorge Alberto Fernandez, 28, of 196 Hope St., was charged with first-degree fail to appear.
- Michelle Feurtado, 32, of 1103 Shippan Ave., was charged with second-degree failure to appear, failure to display lights and failure to display transporter registration.
- Maria Perez, 21, of 777 Summer St., was charged with second-degree failure to appear.
- Bianca N. Torres, 25, of 2225 A Barnum Ave., was charged with third-degree identity theft and fourth-degree larceny.
