The victim was able to fight off her attacker, police said.
Tyub Mohammed, of 36 Stephen St., was charged with third-degree sexual assault and third-degree assault and held on $250,000 bond.
He approached the 34-year-old victim after she parked her car in her West Side building's parking garage at 12:30 a.m., police said. Mohammed followed her into the vestibule area and attempted to talk to her, police said.
As the elevator door opened, he thrust himself upon her and attempted to kiss her, police said. During this attack, Mohammed also bit her lip and groped her crotch area, police said. The woman pushed him, forcing him out of the vestibule, and he left the area, police said.
Officers took an image of the suspect from the surveillance video and circulated it to patrol officers. Within a few hours, numerous officers told investigators they recognized Mohammed because he works at a local establishment, police said.
The surveillance video corroborates the woman's account and also shows the suspect watching her as she arrives at the parking garage and exits her vehicle, police said. The man waited to see whether she was alone before approaching, police said. Police also said it was fortunate that the woman fought back to deter the attacker.
Officers located Mohammed and interviewed him about the incident, police said. In the interview, he placed himself at the complex at the time of the incident and also made some admissions about the sexual assault, police said. After that interview, officers sought and received an arrest warrant, police said.
Capt. Richard Conklin and Lt. Diedrich Hohn commended investigators Sgt. Christopher DiCarlo and Officers David Rodriguez, Angel Gonzalez, and Sean Boeger for their quick work while also showing dignity and compassion to the victim.
