Matthew Saunders, 32, of 6 Avon Lane, is charged with one count each of second-degree breach of peace, third-degree assault and interfering with police. There was also a warrant for his arrest on a charge of violating a protection order. Bond was set at $10,000, and he will appear in state Superior Court in Stamford on Friday.

The incident began at 9 a.m. when a woman called police to report that her sister had been hit in the face with the butt end of a large kitchen knife during a dispute with the sister's live-in boyfriend. The victim said she was afraid to call police, according to her sister.

Officers arrived in the neighborhood but couldn't make any contact with the victim in her home at 6 Avon Lane, which is off Hope Street, police said.

Additional officers arrived shortly before 11 a.m., but about 30 minutes later the victim left the residence, police said. She told police Saunders was still inside and officers went into the home to take him into custody shortly thereafter and arrested him, police said.
