Victor De Jesus Ramos-Cruz, 48, of Stamford, was charged with assaulting a police officer and disorderly conduct.

A police officer went into Curley's Restaurant at West Park Place at 12:30 a.m. Thursday and saw Ramos-Cruz in an argument with the manager over his bill, police said. He appeared to be intoxicated but eventually paid the bill, police said.

However, Ramos-Cruz continued to create a disturbance by trying to push the manager, police said. The officer told him to leave, and as Ramos-Cruz was leaving the manager gave him a bag that he had left behind, police said.

But Ramos-Cruz swiped at the bag, knocking it to the floor, police said. He also tried to grab another patron who was attempting to leave the diner, police said.

Ramos-Cruz also grabbed the officer by the shirt, and the officer then attempted to subdue him, police said.

"He gets taken to the ground and there was a huge struggle," Sgt. Kevin Connelly said. "Now they are all on the ground rolling around."

During this struggle, Ramos-Cruz spit blood at the officer and at other police officers who arrived on the scene, Connelly said.

He was ultimately subdued and taken to the hospital, where he was treated, she said. The officer was checked for any injuries and also received a tetanus shot as a precaution, Connelly said.

As he was being taken back to the cruiser to go to the police station, Ramos-Cruz continued to resist but was eventually placed in the cruiser to be processed at police headquarters, police said.
