At 5 p.m. firefighters responded to the fire near 37 Wood Ridge Drive South. Upon arrival, Stamford firefighters from Engine 8 and Engine 9 found a sedan parked on top of a very large pile of leaves along the side of the roadway.
The fire had already engulfed the engine compartment and undercarriage of the vehicle. In addition, the surrounding and adjacent pile of leaves was also involved in fire.
Firefighters were able to place the blaze under control within two minutes of arriving on the scene, but remained at the location as a tow truck was needed to pull the vehicle off of the pile of leaves. Once the vehicle was removed, the entire area was wet down in order to assure that no remaining pockets of fire remained.
"We would like to remind residents and visitors about the danger and hazards associated with parking their vehicles on top of or adjacent to leaf piles," Capt. Matt Palmer said. "The temperature of the exhaust system on the vehicle will easily ignite the leaf pile and the vehicle. Vehicles should never been left idling or parked on top of the leaf piles."
