Stamford Firefighter, Son Face Forgery, Drug Charges

STAMFORD, Conn. — A Stamford firefighter and his son have been charged in crimes recently after a search warrant was executed at their house last week, Capt. Richard Conklin said.

Stamford Police arrested a father and son on two different sets of charges that came from a search of their home.

Police were investigating the son, Joseph BiVona, 18, for selling drugs out of the Cypress Drive home, and during the search seized one-quarter pound of marijuana, two grams of cocaine, a digital scale, bongs, mason jars, packing material, plastic bags, and $840 in cash, the captain said.

While in the home police also found trays of $1 bills in the process of being washed, which is a popular counterfeiting scheme, Conklin said. Police seized the bills, various chemicals including acetone, hydrogen peroxide, and an unidentified granular solvent, comet gel cleaner, and gloves, the captain said.

During the search Gary BiVona, 46, told police that his children did not know anything about washing money, Conklin said. They also found a marijuana grinder and a large bong in the older BiVona’s home, he said.

Counterfeiters wash $1 bills and then scan larger increments onto the blank bills making them seem real because the paper is, Conklin said. Stamford Police are working with the Secret Service on the case, he said.

Joseph BiVona turned himself in Thursday afternoon and was charged with possession of a controlled substance, sale of a controlled substance, illegal possession of narcotics and operation of a drug factory, police said. He posted a $25,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 15, Conklin said.

Gary BiVona turned himself in Friday morning and was charged with first-degree forgery and possession of drug paraphernalia, police said. He was held on a court-set $50,000 bond and war taken to court on Friday for arraignment, Conklin said.
