Arthur Battle, 34, of 23 Red Rock Terrace, Hamden, was charged with driving under the influence and carrying a firearm while under the influence after officers found a loaded Smith & Wesson handgun in his glove compartment, police said.

An officer found the Audi pointed in the wrong direction in the intersection of East Main Street and Clarks Hill Road road at 1 a.m., Sgt. Kelly Connelly said.

Officers had difficulty waking him, she said. When they were able to rouse him, he had difficulty comprehending their commands to turn the car off and put it in park,, Connelly said.

"His speech was very slurred, he was mumbling and said he was driving to Hamden," Connelly said.

He also couldn't put the key in the glove box to get his registration to give to officers, police said. When an officer opened it, the loaded handgun was spotted and seized, police said. Battle owned the weapon legally, however, officers took it away from him, police said.

He smelled of alcohol and failed the three sobriety tests, police said. He refused to give a breath test and was given a $100 bond and an Oct. 14 court date.
