Leandre Crockett, 18, of Hamden, is facing numerous larceny, firearms trafficking and conspiracy charges in connection with the March 8 thefts, police said.
He was arrested Wednesday.
Also arrested in the case is Travis Ingram, 20, of New Haven. State police say more arrests are expected.
The trooper’s cruiser, along with his personal car, and another trooper’s cruiser were parked in the driveway of his home when they were broken into, police said.
Milford police investigating the break-in found that there had been a rash of other car burglaries in the trooper’s neighborhood that night.
According to a report by wtnh.com, police said the cruiser was locked and the rifle had been in a locked gun vault in its trunk.
However, the thieves found a key in the trooper's gym bag, wtnh.com reported.
State police told wtnh.com that keeping rifles in their cruisers is common and that it was not known if the trooper will face any disciplinary action for leaving the key in the gym bag.
An investigation was launched by the state police’s Major Crimes Squad with the assistance of New Haven police, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the FBI’s Safe Streets Gang Task Force.
As a result, seven firearms were recovered -- including the trooper’s AR-15.
When Crockett was arrested, police said, he was already in custody in connection with an unrelated crime.
Crockett was charged with firearms trafficking, larceny, stealing a firearm and possession of an assault weapon as well as additional charges.
Ingram has been charged with firearms trafficking, larceny, stealing a firearm and possession of an assault weapon as well as additional charges.
Both Crockett and Ingram are being held on two warrants with a total bond of $350,000.
