Stamford officers responded to a home on Meredith Lane at 9:10 p.m. Sunday and to Stamford Hospital, police said.

The son, whose age was not released by police, was transported by his father to Stamford Hospital, where he was treated for a non-life-threatening stab wound to his abdomen, police said.

Officers secured the home and attempted to make contact with the mother, who was reportedly in an "altered mental state," police said.

Officers believed she had barricaded herself in the home, so Stamford Police Special Operations were activated, with the Hostage Negotiation Team and the Special Response Team responding.

HNT attempted for over an hour to make contact with her, while SRT made plans to enter the house, police said.

After nearly two hours of no contact and fearing for the safety of the mother, SRT entered the residence and found the suspect in an attic, police said.

The woman was suffering from several self-inflicted stab wounds, police said. She was quickly taken to an ambulance and transported to Stamford Hospital for treatment, police said.

The self-inflicted wounds appear to be non-life threatening, police said.

The Bureau of Criminal Investigations is investigating the incident.

"We are thankful that the injuries suffered in this incident, while serious, do not appear to be life-threatening," said Stamford police Lt. Michael A. Noto. "This is a tragic and difficult time for this family, and the thoughts and prayers of the Stamford Police Department go out to them."
