Police: Stamford Man Charged With Arson After Setting Fire To House He Owns

STAMFORD, Conn. -- A Stamford man set a multifamily home he owns on fire Wednesday afternoon but was arrested soon after by a police officer who saw him walk out of a vacant lot on the same street, police said.

Anthony Manousos, 33, is charged with first-degree arson and is held on $500,000 bond on charges of trying to burn the home he owns at 52 Highland Road.

A resident at 52 Highland Road opened the door of the residence after smelling gasoline at about 12:40 p.m. Wednesday and noticed gasoline by the door, police said.

The resident shut the door but soon after the stairway was engulfed in flames, forcing the resident to flee the home, police said.

Police were called and told that the suspect was a man who was seen fleeing the rear of the residence earlier.

An officer responding to the fire saw a man coming out of a vacant lot on Highland Road who matched the suspect and arrested the man, police said.

Firefighters were able to douse the fire, but the home sustained significant damage, police said.

No one was hurt in the fire.
