STAMFORD, Conn. — Police do not have many answers to the questions about the shootout that left three people injured Saturday on James Street in Stamford, Lt. Diedrich Hohn said Monday afternoon.

According to Hohn, here is what happened: A birthday party for an 18-year-old woman was taking place at a house on James Street when a group of guys from the West Side showed up, and guys from the East Side tried to kick them out. Once outside, a fight broke out and the two sides began shooting at each other.

Hohn said he did not know whether the group from the West Side went to the party looking for trouble or it was a reaction to being told to leave. He said he believes the shooting stemmed from the ongoing East Side-West Side rivalry in Stamford.

During the incident, three people were shot. They were treated at Stamford Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Two of the injured men were West Side residents, and the other was from the East Side, Hohn said. Investigators tried talking to the gunshot victims, but they were uncooperative, Hohn said.

Officers found shell casings from four different guns at the scene and may have recovered two casings involved in the shooting, a statement from the police department said. One was found at the hospital and the other in a motor vehicle stop/police pursuit, the statement said.

Investigators are trying to talk to other witnesses who were at the party, Hohn said. Witnesses can contact the Bureau of Criminal Investigations at 203-977-4417.
