Multiple businesses turned away the suspect, but at least two stores took the fake bill and made change, police said.
The incident came to light at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, when officers were called to a Post Road store on a report that a customer had tried to pass a counterfeit bill, police said.
The employee said a male suspect attempted to purchase a book for $9.50 using a $50 bill, but the employee said the bill looked old and “not real,” police said.
The employee, believing the bill was fake, told the male suspect that she did not have change for the $50 bill, police said. The suspect said he would get change, took the bill, and left, police said.
The suspect was described as a Hispanic man in his 20s, police said.
Officers canvassed surrounding businesses and found that a man matching the description had attempted to pass a $50 bill in their businesses, police said.
Of the seven businesses reporting the same incident with the same suspect, two accepted the bill and gave change, police said.
The counterfeit bills were collected, and the U.S. Secret Service was contacted.
The investigation is continuing.
