Police: Man Tried To Illegally Take Gas In Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. — Two men were arrested Monday, suspected of illegally filling up containers with gasoline to transport in Stamford, Sgt. Robert Shawinsky said.

One suspect, of Jackson Heights, N.Y., was filling up two, 55-gallon drums with gasoline Monday evening at the Global Gas Station on East Main Street, Shawinsky said. The suspect was storing the drums in the back of a Sleepy’s Box Truck, he said.

“This is an extremely, extremely dangerous situation,” Shawinsky said.

The suspect told police he gave the gas station attendant $500 for the gas, and began filling up, Shawinsky said. The attendant also was charged as it is his responsibility to make sure people don’t fill up containers with gasoline illegally, he said.

Both were charged with violating regulations of transporting of flammable liquid, Shawinsky said.
