Police: Man Caught Selling Guns In Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. — A Stamford man was arrested after he sold a rifle to an undercover cop on the city’s East Side Wednesday evening, police Lt. Tim Shaw said.

The undercover officer bought a rifle from the suspect, Michael Lotz, 44, for $200, Shaw said. After the undercover officer left with the weapon, police arrested the suspect, he said.

A surveillance unit also saw Lotz sell rifles to another man earlier in the day, Shaw said. Police seized three rifles from that person, who cooperated with officers and was not charged, he said.

Police seized four rifles, a shotgun, and an assault weapon in connection with Lotz, Shaw said.

Police first began to follow Lotz after Lt. Chris Baker received information that the suspect had guns that he wanted to sell quickly, Shaw said. The information Baker received may also link Lotz to an arson that took place on Aug. 28, but police are still investigating, Shaw said.

Lotz has been charged with four counts of felony criminal possession of a firearm, felony possession of an assault weapon, felony sale of a an assault weapon and two counts of felony risk of injury to a minor for using a 16-year-old as a lookout, Shaw said. He was held on a $150,000 bond and has a court date of Sept. 11, he said.
