Stamford Police Sgt. Simon Blanc said the man was walking home at about 5 a.m. after leaving a restaurant when he saw four black men on Atlantic Street and Bell Street. As he walked by, one man in the group came up from behind, put a chokehold on him and grabbed his wallet, which contained $120, he said.

There was a brief struggle as the attacker unsuccessfully tried to grab the man’s cell phone, Blanc said.

A passing taxi driver saw the man by the side of the road and called police.

The injured man was treated and released from Stamford Hospital.
