Stamford police Lt. Diedrich Hohn was conducting a programmed patrol on foot near the Elks Club at 33 Mission St., which has been "the scene of shootings, gun calls, fights, loud music, drug and drinking use in the past," police said

Hohn saw about 10 males loitering in the parking lot while drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana, police said.

He approached and saw a man, later identified as Lamar Taylor, 30, walk away from the group who was wearing winter wool gloves, police said.

Taylor opened the door to a green Toyota Camry, bent over and placed something in the area of the driver’s seat, police said. He then closed the door and walked back toward the group, police said.

At this point, Hohn believed Taylor was attempting to hide contraband or a weapon, police said. It was also suspicious that he was wearing winter gloves when it was 65 degrees and humid, police said.

As Taylor re-entered the group, he was detained and a short struggle ensued, police said.

Taylor was immediately handcuffed, and backup arrived shortly thereafter, police said.

Officer Louis Burdi secured the vehicle and found a loaded .357 Smith and Wesson revolver, with its hammer back for immediate use, underneath the driver’s side seat, police said.

Taylor was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a handgun and interfering with police. He was held on $100,000 bond.

He had been out on bond in another gun incident that occurred in Bridgeport in July.

"Taylor’s criminal history is extensive and within the decade Taylor has arrests and convictions for gun possession, robberies, aggravated assaults, narcotics and failure to appears," Stamford police said.

"We believe that Taylor was intending on using that weapon imminently prior to Lt. Hohn’s arrival and most likely a tragedy was averted with his proactive work," police said.
